Examining the integration of tourism policies into sectoral policies through the lens of governance
A comparative analysis of four European urban destinations
As a PhD candidate at the University of Glasgow, Bernadett’s aim is to critically analyse the current state of urban tourism governance in four European city destinations. Her goal is to develop an optimized governance framework. This framework will ensure the effective integration of tourism policy design and implementation into the management of urban areas.
Reason
Horizontal, vertical and sectoral fragmentation often hinders tourism policy making that can effectively contribute towards sustainable urban development. It is crucial to review existing governance frameworks to better understand to what extent these frameworks accommodate the complexities of tourism development and finding ways to optimize tourism policy design and implementation.
Problem solution
Tourism is becoming more and more intertwined with everyday urban life. Therefore, it can not be treated in isolation. There is a need for tourism researchers to engage with urban theory and for policy makers to recognize the importance of the sector to move tourism up in the urban agenda.
